Helping By Stepping Down

Part of our human nature is to want to help others. For the most part this is a positive and important quality, However there are circumstances when it is intrusive, I learned that lesson today in a hard yet humbling way. I hope that the young woman who blessed me with this lesson has the opportunity to read this. This is both an apology and a dedication to her.

I was about to leave the gym and the young woman was in front of me. Her circumstances cause her to use a cane to help her walk. She was heading towards the exit, and naturally I wanted to open the door for her. So I went ahead and did so. She looked at me and shook her head. "Are you sure?" I asked. The young woman shot me an annoyed look and turned towards the desk towards the exit. I shrugged it off and headed outside. That was when I realized my mistake.

Opening and closing doors, is one of the many ways that helps this young woman beat the odds. I completely squandered that opportunity for her, and obviously made her feel incapable of doing something that she put her mind to. Now that I think about it, I had all of the time in the world to be patient and could have easily let her accomplish that. I also realize how frustrated I feel, when people instantly try to fix my troubles when all I want is to be listened to . Although it is a different scenario, I understand and sympathize with her on how bothersome instant intervention can be. I am truly sorry for hurting her feelings, and realize that the best way to help her is to step down and let her open that door herself. That way she feels encouraged by others and not discouraged.

I am not saying that I will stop opening doors for people, that is not my intention. I'm just saying that now I know that it is best to take a step back, and analyze the situation. If a person like this young woman needs the time to open the door, I'll give them that time. If they are struggling, then I'll give them the help. Whether or not all of you want to apply this lesson to your own lives, is completely up to you. However this blessing is something to keep in mind.

I'm going to end this blog with a short prayer: Heavenly father, may this young woman and others like her continue to beat the odds with strength and perseverance. May light, love, and peace follow them wherever they go. Amen.

Thank you for your time and may you find blessings in all that you do!
